Home improvement fraud charges filed
A Wyalusing man was recently arrested by Athens Township police on 10 violations of the Pennsylvania Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act.
According to information filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Charles Sanders, 36, was charged with four counts of criminal attempt to make a false statement to induce an agreement for home improvement services, three counts of criminal attempt to receive advance payment for services and fail to perform, and three counts of criminal attempt to alter an agreement without consumer consent.
Police said Sanders received advance payments and made false or misleading statements for three separate contracts to complete renovations on an Athens Township residence. Sanders is accused of accepting payment for services and then not performing them, according to police.
Sanders was arraigned May 15 and released from the Bradford County Jail on non-monetary bail. Sanders' preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 27.
Police to participate in seat belt checks
The Athens Township Police Department announces that a "Border to Border" seat belt enforcement will take place at 6 p.m. Monday, May 19 as part of the statewide Click It or Ticket mobilization, according to a release from the department.
The mobilization aims to reduce seat belt fatalities by coordinating highly visible, evening seat belt enforcement checkpoints and details at well-traveled state border sites, according to the release.
Retail theft charge
An Owego, N.Y. woman was recently charged with retail theft by Athens Township police.
According to papers filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Tiffany A. Floyd, 26, then an employee of the Kmart store on Elmira Street, voided at least $450 worth of items on her register for customers who were relatives, allowing the family members to take the items home without paying for them.
Floyd's preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 10.
Man charged with indecent assault of child
A Sayre man was recently charged with 31 counts of indecent assault on a person less than 13 years of age by Sayre Borough police.
According to information filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Robert D. Stumph Jr., 35, was charged with 20 counts for repeatedly inappropriately touching a female child between September 2011 and September 2013.
Police said Stumph was charged with 10 additional counts for repeatedly doing the same to a female child between July 2012 and September 2013. Stumph was also charged with one count for attempting to inappropriately touch a female child spending the night at Stumph's residence on Pleasant Street in South Waverly Borough.
Stumph's preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 17.
Copper cable taken
State police at Mansfield said that someone cut and removed approximately 10 feet of copper bonding cable from a gas well site sometime between 4 p.m. May 6 and 10:24 a.m. May 7 at DCNR Well Pad 857 at 151 Jones Lane in Ward Township, Tioga County, Pa. and fled the scene in an unknown direction by unknown means.
The victim was Talisman Energy, Inc., police said.
Inappropriate messages received
State police at Towanda said they are investigating an incident that occurred between April 1 and May 2 in Troy Township in which a 12-year-old female juvenile was receiving inappropriate messages from someone through her phone.
