Man charged with terroristic threats

Dale Randolph Lafy, 61, of Ulster has pleaded not guilty to charges of terroristic threats and harassment, police said.

The charges stem from an April 14 incident in Ulster Township, police said.

The victim, Javon Stringham, told police that he had observed Lafy conversing with a Mark Sheeley on April 14 at a location on Beers Road in Ulster Township, according to a criminal complaint that the state police had filed against Lafy in Towanda District Court.

According to Stringham, Lafy told Sheeley that Stringham better slow down when driving on Beers Road or Lafy would have to shoot him, the complaint states.

According to Stringham, Lafy told Sheeley that Lafy had ways of "taking care" of Stringham, the complaint states.

Stringham told police that he made eye contact with Lafy and saw Lafy pull his coat back, revealing a pistol tucked into his waistband, the complaint states.

Following a preliminary hearing on May 27, Towanda Magisterial District Judge Timothy Clark ruled that there is enough evidence to bind the case over to the Bradford County Court of Common Pleas.

Lafy waived his arraignment in the Court of Common Pleas, which had been scheduled for June 18, court records show.

Lafy's next court date has not yet been scheduled, court records show.

Theft occurs in Wysox Township

An individual stole Frances Elliott's Access card, Social Security disability bank card, and a photo ID from her wallet while cutting the grass at Elliott's residence in Wysox Township, police said.

The theft occurred at 8 a.m. on June 9 at a location on River Road, state police said.

State police said they are continuing to investigate the incident.

Vehicle overturns in Monroe Twp.

A baby girl suffered a minor injury in a recent motor vehicle accident in Monroe Township, police said.

The accident occurred at 9:30 a.m. on June 17 as 26-year-old Christopher M. Brown of Wyalusing was driving a 2009 Honda Accord west on Wickham Falls Road, police said.

The vehicle hit an embankment, overturned onto its roof, and came to rest in water, according to the state police at Towanda.

The baby girl, who was a passenger in the vehicle, received bruises on her head, police said.

The infant was in a child safety seat and Brown was using a seat belt, police said.

Mildred woman cited for corruption of minors

Valerie Michelle Land, 33, of Mildred was cited for the summary offense of corruption of minors after police conducted a traffic stop on her vehicle at 8:17 a.m. on June 12 in Hillsgrove Township, police said.

During the traffic stop, Land was found to have three active bench warrants out of the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office, police said.

In addition, she had her 8-year-old son with her, who was supposed to be in school, state police at Laporte said.

Burglary occurs in Wysox Township

A burglary occurred at Elizabeth Rae Benjamin's apartment on Golden Mile Road in Wysox Township, police said.

Sometime between 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. on May 23, someone entered the apartment and damaged household items, state police said.

Towanda man victim of fraud

Joseph M. Yonkin, 74, of Towanda was the recent victim of fraud, state police said.

At 4:45 p.m. Friday, Yonkin was solicited via telephone by a male who identified himself as a computer software support employee with Metrix Idea, who works in conjunction with Microsoft, according to police.

The victim subsequently sent a large amount of money via Western Union to a location in India, state police at Towanda said.

Athens man charged with theft

Aaron Nathaneal Barth, 27, of Athens, was charged with theft by unlawful taking or disposition by Athens Borough Police between June 5 and June 8 after Barth was found to be in possession of three checks belonging to Futures Community Support Services, Inc. and made out to Twin Rivers Terrace Apartments, Athens police said.

According to police, Barth attempted to cash three checks, totaling $467, at Walmart and Tops in Sayre on June 6.

Police said Barth signed all three checks with either different names or altered handwriting.

Barth told police the checks were in his mailbox and that he thought they were rent rebate checks despite knowing his name was not on the checks, police said.

Barth has been issued a summons to appear before Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw on August 4 for his preliminary hearing.

Waverly woman facing retail theft charge

Athens Township police charged Bonita M. English, 50, of Waverly, with retail theft on June 21 after English attempted to steal 23 items from the Elmira Street Walmart in Sayre, Athens police said.

Walmart's asset protection associate witnessed English select items from the pharmacy then pick up and pay for a prescription at the pharmacy desk, police said.

Police said English did not pay for some items in her cart and exited the store without attempting to pay for the other items.

The associate confronted English, who cooperated and stayed at the store until police arrived, police said.

The 23 items totaled $186.78, police said.

English has been issued a summons to appear before Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw on August 4 for her preliminary hearing.

Towanda woman charged with drug possession, DUI

Sarah Jene Conklin, 22, of Towanda has been charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving under the influence of a controlled substance, failing to stay in her lane and careless driving relating to an Aug. 1, 2014 incident on State Route 187 in Asylum Township.

According to police, Conklin crashed her vehicle on State Route 187 and state police responded to the incident.

Police said when they arrived, Conklin was acting paranoid and made reference to hearing voices while driving alone in her vehicle.

Conklin failed a field sobriety test at the scene of the crash, police said.

A tin containing white powder was recovered from Conklin's purse after police searched her, according to documents filed with the courtroom of Magisterial District Judge Fred Wheaton.

The white powder was identified as Alpha-PVP, a common ingredient found in bath salts, police said.

On the night of her arrest, Conklin submitted to a blood test which revealed she was under the influence of Alpha-PVP and marijuana at the time of the incident, police said.

Conklin has been sent a summons to appear before Judge Wheaton on July 14 at 1 p.m. for a preliminary hearing.
