Athens incident leads to assault charge

A Sayre man is facing an assault charge after striking a woman during a domestic dispute Monday afternoon in Athens Borough, according to Athens Borough Police.

Christopher Erick Hammond, 48, of Sayre, has been charged with one count of attempted simple assault, a misdemeanor charge, by Athens Borough Police after striking a female victim in the head, police said.

Police responded to a call regarding a domestic dispute at the intersection of East Pine Street and Wells Avenue where they found the victim standing next to a vehicle and holding a bloody towel to her nose, police said.

The victim told police Hammond struck her in the back of the head after slapping him in the face to keep him away from her while she attempted to drive the vehicle, police said.

As a result of being struck, the victim said her face hit the steering wheel, police said.

The victim told police she thought her nose was broken and that she chipped a tooth, police said.

According to witnesses on scene, the victim struck Hammond, which led to Hammond striking the victim, police said.

Police located Hammond, who was on foot, and Hammond admitted to striking the victim and that the force caused her to hit the steering wheel, police said.

Hammond was released on $2,500 unsecured bail and has been issued a summons to appear before Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw on Aug. 4 for his preliminary hearing.

Oxycodone pills stolen

Between noon and 3 p.m. on July 18, a person broke into a home located on Place Lane in Towanda Township, belonging to Robert Lincoln Vanderpool, 65, of Towanda, and stole approximately 100 oxycodone pills while the resident was gone, according to state police. Anyone with information is asked to contact the state police at Towanda.

Vehicle strikes deer

At 6 a.m. on July 18, a vehicle operated by Gwen Schmeckenbecher, 32, of Monroeton struck a deer on Route 6 in Standing Stone Township, 526 feet west of Garrett Road.

Schmeckenbecher was traveling east on Route 6 when a deer entered the road from the south side. Schmeckenbecher's vehicle hit the deer and continued for 50 yards until stopping at the eastbound roadside shoulder. The driver and her passenger were not injured, according to state police.

The vehicle was later towed by Fulmer's Garage

Burglary reported

State police are investigating a burglary that occurred recently at a private residence in Franklin Township.

According to police, the incident occurred between 4:30 p.m. on July 10 and 8 a.m. on July 19 at the residence of Theresa Ziegler, 57, of Boyertown. Police said the perpetrators gained entry to the residence, located at 5399 Schrader Creek Rd., by throwing a large rock through a window. It is unclear the intention of the burglars, police continued, because nothing appeared to be disturbed inside. The perpetrators then fled the scene, apparently undetected. Anyone with information about the incident is requested to contact the state police at (570) 265-2186.

Two-car crash occurs in Wysox

One person suffered minor injuries recently when a two-vehicle crash occurred on U.S. Route 6 in Wysox.

According to state police, David E. Woodruff, 47, of Wysox, was driving a 1998 Ford Taurus west on Route 6 on July 18 around 2:10 p.m. Police said that Woodruff failed to stop his vehicle as it approached the traffic light at the intersection of U.S. Route 187, which was red at the time. In the process, the Taurus struck the rear of a 2013 Nissan Juke operated by Catherine L. Gramlich, 72, of Wyalusing, who had stopped her vehicle for the light.

Gramlich was transported from the scene by Wysox ambulance for medical treatment. Police said that Woodruff will be cited for following too closely.

Break-in reported

State police are looking for the perpetrators who broke into a private residence recently in Wysox.

According to police, the incident occurred between 3 p.m. on July 4 and 9 a.m. on July 20. Police said burglars gained entry to the residence of Robert Benjamin, 65, of Sayre, by breaking the lock on a back door of the property, located at 1897 Lake Rd. in Wysox, and opening several drawers once they got inside. The perpetrators then fled the scene, apparently undetected. Anyone with information about the incident is requested to contact the state police at (570) 265-2186.

Driver cited for hit-and-run

A driver was cited for failing to report a collision that occurred recently in Wysox.

According to state police, Thomas R. Masters, 57, of New Albany, was cited for Vehicle Code 3745 - Accidents Involving Damage. Police said that Masters is accused of striking the driver-side door of a Ford 150 pickup truck around 10:36 a.m. on July 13 as it was parked in the Auto Zone parking lot. Police said that Masters was driving a 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan when the incident occurred. According to the reports, Masters got out of his vehicle after the impact, and observed the damage that had occurred. Masters then re-entered his vehicle and fled the scene in an unknown direction, police said. No injuries were reported from the crash.

No injuries reported from crash

No injuries were reported when a three-vehicle crash occurred recently on U.S. Route 6 in Wysox.

According to state police, James L. Johnston, 25, of Malone, N.Y. was driving a Chevrolet Silverado west on Route 6 around 5:30 p.m. on July 14. Police said that Johnston failed to bring his vehicle to a stop in time to avoid striking traffic that was in front of his vehicle, causing it to strike the rear of a Ford Explorer operated by Thomas O. Wood, 59, of Wysox, near the Bradford Towne Center. The impact then caused the Explorer to strike the rear of a 2012 Hyundai Elantra operated by Megan Snell, 30, of Towanda.

The Silverado was removed by Fulmer's Towing, while the other two vehicles were driven from the scene. Police said that Johnston was cited for operating his vehicle at an unsafe speed.

Dog found

A small dog found recently by the state police was turned over to the Bradford County Humane Society.

According to police, the dog - described as brown and black in color - was found around 5:30 p.m. on July 12 in the area of the U.S. Route 6 and U.S. Route 220 interchange. The dog had a collar, but no tags. Police said the Humane Society will hold the dog until an owner is reached or the animal is adopted.

Man cited for harassment

State police reported filing a harassment charge against a Wysox man following an incident that occurred recently in Wysox.

According to police, Justin Janney, 28, was charged with the above offense on July 14. Around 8 p.m. on that date, the report continued, Janney is accused of having grabbed the arm of an 18-year-old female from Athens during a verbal argument. The woman suffered a minor bruise as a result, police said.

Man charged after high-speed chase

A man was recently ordered incarcerated in lieu of bail following a high-speed chase that occurred in Dushore Borough.

According to state police at Laporte, Steven James Spencer, no address or age provided, was taken into custody on July 10 on a charge of theft. Around 10:05 p.m., according to the report, police were in the area of the Acorn gas station on U.S. Route 220, when they observed a white Dodge Ram pickup truck travel through the intersection of state Route 4018 at an apparent high rate of speed. Police said the pickup turned left onto Route 4018, almost striking a vehicle which had stopped at a stop sign in the process. The Dodge then increased its speed, traveling down on the wrong side of the road in the process.

Police said they gave chase, activating their warning lights in the process, but the pickup accelerated to speeds of 65- to 70-miles-per-hour in a posted 35-mile-per-hour zone. The Dodge turned right onto Happy's Road, where Spencer stopped the vehicle, and fled into a densely wooded area. Police said they were unable to locate Spencer at the scene, and obtained a warrant for his arrest. Spencer was eventually located at 102 Carpenter St. in Dushore were he was taken into custody and arraigned before District Magistrate Jennifer Vandine, who ordered the defendant incarcerated at the Columbia County Correctional Facility in lieu of $15,000 bail.

Woman faces obstruction charge

A Towanda woman was recently cited by state police on a charge of obstruction of justice following an incident that occurred in Dushore Borough.

According to state police at Laporte, Stacey Marie Terry was charged with the above offense on July 13. Around 10:38 a.m., the report continued, police were attempting to serve a warrant at 102 Carpenter St. for Steven James Spencer. Police said that Terry informed them Spencer was not on the premises. However, police said, they eventually located Spencer at the address, hiding on a second story flat roof against the house.

Woman accused of possession

A woman was cited by the Bradford County Sheriff's Office recently on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to a report filed by the Sheriff's Office, Christina Marie Sneed, 31, of Beech Creek, was charged with the above offense following an incident that occurred on June 24 at the Bradford County Courthouse. The report said Sneed was in the process of entering the courthouse when she ran her purse through the x-ray machine at the main entrance. The machine revealed a pipe in Sneed's purse, which she confirmed upon questioning by sheriff's deputies. The pipe was taken into evidence by the deputies at the scene and Sneed was escorted to the Sheriff's Office for questioning.

Sneed has been sent a summons to appear before Magisterial District Judge Tim Clark on July 29.

Woman charged with furnishing alcohol to a minor

A Rome woman has been sent a summons to appear before Magisterial District Judge Tim Clark to answer a charge of furnishing alcoholic beverages to a minor.

According to information filed at Clark's office, Larissa Morgan Johnson, 21, was cited by state police for the above offense following a traffic stop that occurred on June 27. On that date, the report continued, state police stopped a vehicle at 627 Railroad St. in Towanda Township. The driver of the vehicle, Caleb Bennett, 20, was determined to have a blood alcohol content of .031 percent at the scene. Police said the owner of the vehicle, Johnson, was riding with Bennett when the stop occurred. Following Bennett's arrest for driving while under the influence, police said, they spoke with Johnson, who admitted to purchasing the alcoholic beverages for Bennett.

Johnson is scheduled to appear before Judge Clark on Aug. 21.
