Man charged with aggravated assault

A Towanda man accused of striking and injuring another man recently was ordered incarcerated in lieu of bail on a charge of aggravated assault.

According to information filed with Magisterial District Judge Tim Clark, Dennis James Singleton, 47, has also been charged by state police with entering a residence when he had not been given permission to do so; criminal trespass; simple assault; harassment; and public drunkenness.

Singleton has been accused of striking and injuring E.J. Stewart on July 28 at Stewart's residence in Towanda. Police said Stewart and Bobi Jo Noto, who was at the scene when the incident occurred, reported that Singleton came up on the porch and attacked Stewart. During the incident, Singleton is alleged to have picked up a hammer and struck Stewart in the area of the left eye, injuring him in the process. A neighbor, Edward Webster, heard the altercation and was able to separate Singleton from Stewart. Singleton then fled the scene and was later picked up by the state police on Main Street in Towanda near the bridge.

Singleton was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, who ordered the defendant incarcerated in lieu of $25,000 bail. Singleton's preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Aug. 5 before Judge Clark.
