Spencer, N.Y. pair facing drug charges

Village of Waverly Police charged Amber L. Herman, 23, and Allen R. Hiffner, 29, both of Spencer, N.Y., with drug crimes following a police investigation into a possible DUI.

Herman was charged with misdemeanor criminal possession of a controlled substance in the 7th degree and endangering the welfare of a child. Hiffner was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and operating a vehicle without a license, police said.

Police said the suspected vehicle left a Cayuta Avenue business at about 5 p.m. on Aug. 28 and police stopped it on New York State Route 17.

Hiffner was driving the vehicle and Herman, along with three children all under 7 years old, were passengers in the vehicle, police said.

Herman and Hiffner are scheduled to answer the charges in the Village of Waverly Justice Court on Sept. 10.

Felony DWI arrest in Waverly

Michelle L. Ferguson, 41, was charged with felony DWI and felony aggravated DWI by Village of Waverly Police on Sept. 2, on Broad Street in Waverly, police said.

Ferguson was also cited for moving from the lane and having an open alcohol container in her vehicle, police said.

Police said Ferguson struck an unattended parked vehicle on Broad Street.

No injuries were reported in the accident, police said.

Ferguson is scheduled to answer the charges in the Village of Waverly Justice Court on Sept. 3.

Waverly man facing multiple felony charges

Adam J. Pettit, 35, of Waverly, was charged with misdemeanor criminal possession of a weapon, 4th degree; felony criminal possession of a weapon, 3rd degree; and felony criminal possession of stolen property, 4th degree, by Village of Waverly Police on Sept. 1 following an investigation into a burglary and stolen property report, Waverly Police said.

Charges were filed after police enacted a search warrant on Pettit's home, where police found Pettit to be in possession of a stolen semi-automatic handgun, police said.

Pettit is a convicted felon and cannot own or possess firearms, police said.

Police said Pettit was arraigned in the Nichols, N.Y. Justice Court that evening and was remanded to the Tioga County, N.Y. jail to await further legal action.

Retail theft charges filed against Waverly man

Justin Aaron Staats, 25, of Waverly, has been charged with retail theft by Athens Township Police after attempting to steal merchandise from the Elmira Street Walmart in Athens on Sept. 1, Athens police said.

Walmart's asset protection associate told police they apprehended a shoplifter, later identified as Staats, and said they witnessed him place electronic vehicle equipment and DVDs in a backpack, police said.

Staats selected grocery items and paid for them at a self checkout aisle, but did not pay for the items in the backpack and exited the store, police said.

The stolen items totaled $170.97, police said.

Staats was remanded to the Bradford County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.

Staats will appear before Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw on Sept. 8 for his preliminary hearing.
