Man charged with failure to register
A Sayre man was cited by state police recently for failure to comply with registration requirements as a known sex offender.
According to information filed with Magisterial District Judge Tim Clark, Duane Terrence Demellier, 32, of 503 N. Elmer Ave., was charged with the above offense on July 30. State police reported that Demellier missed two different verification periods within a 10-day period - from April 7 to 16 and from July 7 to 16. In addition, the report continued, Demellier changed his telephone number and address without notifying the authorities of the change within a three-day period as required by law.
Demellier's preliminary hearing before Judge Clark has been scheduled for Sept. 13.
Man charged with burglary
A Waverly man was arrested by state police recently on a charge of burglary.
According to papers filed with Magisterial District Judge Tim Clark, Matthew Patrick Gay, 22, of 18 Crane Road, has also been charged with theft by unlawful taking, and criminal mischief.
Police reported receiving information from Athens Township police on an unrelated investigation that Gay had come into possession of an air compressor and generator which had been located at Sammy's Swap Shop in Waverly. The items, according to the report, had earlier been stolen from a private residence in Albany Township.
Further investigation led them to believe that Gay had stolen the items, then pawned the items for $70 at Sammy's Swap Shop via another person. Gay was arrested and arraigned before Clark, who ordered the defendant incarcerated in lieu of $20,000 bail.
Man accused of aggravated assault
A man accused of striking and injuring another man was arrested by state police recently on a charge of aggravated assault.
According to state police, James Todd Place, 40, of no permanent address, has also been charged with criminal trespass, terroristic threats, harassment, and recklessly endangering another person.
Place is accused of assaulting and injuring Richard Thomas Gowin of 461 Railroad St., Towanda Township, during an altercation on July 4, around 11:15 p.m. Gowan said he was asleep on the coach when Place entered his residence, grabbed him by the throat, and began to choke him. During the altercation, Gowan said, Place struck him in the face. Police noted bruises and lacerations on Gowan's face during the interview. In addition, Place grabbed Mary Place, who lives with Gowan, during the incident, causing lacerations to her arm.
James Place was arrested and arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Tim Clark, who ordered the defendant incarcerated in lieu of $10,000 bail. Place's preliminary hearing before Clark has been scheduled for Aug. 21.
Woman charged with false statements
An Athens woman has been sent a summons to appear before Magisterial District Judge Tim Clark to answer a charge of providing false statements to the authorities.
According to information filed at Clark's office, Hoang D. Phan, 34, of 110 N. Elmira St., has been charged with the above offense by the Office of the Inspector General. Phan is accused of illegally obtaining $2,488 SNAP benefits - previously known as Food Stamps. According to the affidavit, Phan failed to report child support payments she was receiving to the Bradford County Assistance Office on April 24.
Phan's preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Sept. 18.
Man charged with theft
A New Albany man accused of stealing a Jeep Cherokee was arrested by state police recently on a charge of theft by deception.
According to information filed with Magisterial District Judge Tim Clark, Matthew Patrick Gay, 22, of 2257 French Creek Rd., New Albany, has also been charged with receiving stolen property, and bad checks.
State police Trooper Anthony Stempien reported interviewing Charles Alven May Jr. of New Albany on Sept. 24. May informed Stempien that the day before, Gay had purchased his 1996 Jeep Cherokee for $4,800, as well as a single axle trailer for $675, May explained that Gay had paid by two checks from M&T Bank, then left the area with the Jeep and the trailer.
The next day, May explained, when he attempted to cash the checks, he was informed by the bank that the account had been closed.
Gay was arrested and arraigned before Judge Clark, who ordered the defendant incarcerated in lieu of $20,000 bail. Gay's preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Aug. 21.
Man faces stalking charge
A Towanda man has been sent a summons to appear before Magisterial District Judge Tim Clark to answer a charge of stalking.
According to information filed in Clark's office, Joseph John Joslyn, 37, of 208 Main St., has also been charged by Towanda police with two counts of harassment. Joslyn is accused of having repeated contact with Tara Arnold on numerous occasions, both at her place of employment and other locations, despite being repeated warned not to do so.
Josyln is scheduled to appear for his preliminary hearing before Judge Clark on Sept. 11.
Man charged with theft
A Wysox man has been sent a summons to appear before Magisterial District Judge Tim Clark to answer a charge of theft by deception.
According to papers filed in Clark's office, Randolph J. Potter of 96 Tulip Lane, has also been charged by Bradford County Detective Kyle G. Wisel with writing a bad check. Potter is accused of writing a check for $700 to Kenneth Hoover Jr. of Towanda in April for payment of rent. The check, according to the report, was returned by the bank marked "Not Sufficient Funds." The report indicated that Potter failed to make good on the check, despite being given a reasonable amount of time to do so.
Potter is scheduled to appear before Judge Clark on Sept. 13.
Man charged with attempted simple assault
Adam Robert Merkel, 38, of 14 Crooks Terrace, Apt. 8, Canton, faces a preliminary hearing at 2:15 p.m. Aug. 21 before Magisterial District Judge Jonathan Wilcox of Troy on charges of simple assault - attempt; harassment/strike, shove, kick, etc.; and summary disorderly conduct - engage in fighting for an incident that occurred at 10:40 p.m. June 28 at the Canton Grill on Troy Street in Canton in which he is accused of causing bodily injury to Kenneth Carey, no age or address given, according to court papers filed with Wilcox's office.
Police said Merkel struck Carey in the face.
According to an affidavit, Carey said Merkel approached him and began arguing about a previous family matter. They went outside and Merkel struck him in the face, knocking him to the ground.
DUI charges
The following people were cited recently for driving while under the influence:
Mark John Matikonis, 36, of 45 Pine Creek Lane, Monroeton, has also been charged by state police with careless driving and failure to notify the authorities of a motor vehicle accident. Matikonis was charged following a one-vehicle accident involving his pickup truck on July 1 on Brocktown Road in Monroe Township, in which he fled the scene without reporting the incident, police said. Matikonis was found by the authorities a short time later at a private residence on Brocktown Road, where he was taken into custody. A blood test later revealed that Matikonis' blood alcohol content was .163 percent on the day of the crash. His preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Sept. 25 before Magisterial District Judge Tim Clark.
Jorge Aurelio Reyes-Valadez, 25, of Winston-Salem, N.C., has also been charged by Towanda police with driving without a valid license, careless driving, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, failure to provide proper notification to the authorities of a motor vehicle accident, following too closely, and failure to stop for a stop sign. Reyes-Valadez is accused of striking a vehicle with his pickup truck at the intersection of Veterans Memorial Bridge and Main Street on Aug. 13, then leaving the scene. When spotted by the police, Reyes-Valadez drove through an intersection and failed to stop for a stop-sign, according to the report. Reyes-Valadez was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Tim Clark, who ordered the defendant incerated in lieu of $50,000 bail. His preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Aug. 21.
Ashley Paul Bush, 30, of 14 Pratt Ave., Towanda, has also been charged by Towanda police with driving the wrong way down a one-way street, possessing an open container of an alcoholic beverage in a moving vehicle, careless driving, and reckless driving on Aug. 8. A blood test eventually revealed that Bush's blood alcohol content was .273 percent on the day of his arrest. Bush has been sent a summons to appear before Magisterial District Judge Tim Clark on Sept. 18.
Tara Ann McKernan, 36, of 425 State St., Towanda, has also been charged by state police with operating a motor vehicle without insurance, speeding, and careless driving. Police reported stopping McKernan's vehicle on July 27 on state Route 220 in North Towanda Township for traveling at an excessive rate of speed. McKernan was eventually taken into custody for DUI and a blood test eventually revealed that her blood alcohol content was .204 percent on the day of her arrest. McKernan has been sent a summons to appear before Magisterial District Judge Tim Clark on Sept. 11.
