Firearm charges filed
A Gillett man was recently arrested by Athens Township police on a charge of possession of a firearm with the manufacturer number altered.
According to information filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Cory David Briggs, 28, was also charged with carrying a firearm without a license.
Police said officers found Briggs at about 8:50 p.m. June 10 going through a garbage can outside an Elmira Street business. Briggs was found to be in possession of a loaded Smith and Wesson 40-caliber semi-automatic handgun that appeared to have its serial number intentionally removed, according to police. Police said the gun was found in a backpack belonging to Briggs.
Briggs was arraigned June 10 by Magisterial District Judge Fred Wheaton and remanded to the Bradford County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail. Briggs' preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 18.
Two face drug charges
A Sayre couple was recently incarcerated by Athens Township police on drug-related charges.
According to papers filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Harold B. Vanderpool, 42, and Lisa M. Vanderpool, 42, were both charged with two counts each of possession of a controlled substrance, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal conspiracy and criminal use of a communication facility.
Police said the Vanderpools sold Vicodin pills to a confidential informant twice in Oct. 2012 at their Marie Lane residence.
Both Vanderpools were arraigned June 11 by Magisterial District Judge Timothy Clark and remanded to the Bradford County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail. Their preliminary hearings are scheduled for June 18.
Attempted rape charge
An Athens man was recently charged with attempted rape by Athens Borough police.
According to information filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Dale R. Arnold, 34, was also charged with indecent assault.
Police said Arnold attempted to rape a woman June 8 at a borough residence.
Arnold was arraigned June 10 and remanded to the Bradford County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail. Arnold's preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 18.
Sayre woman charged
A Sayre woman was recently arrested by borough police on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.
According to information filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Delta D. Burns, 37, was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
Police said Burns was found to be in possession of suboxone pills and an unlabeled pill bottle following investigation into a report of possible narcotics found at a Glaser Street residence.
Burns' preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 16.
Two charged following crash
Sayre borough police recently filed charges against two people in relation to a May 11 motor vehicle accident.
According to papers filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Jessica Marie Williams, 29, of Waverly, was charged with driving under the influence and careless driving. Police said Kevin Allen Fessenden, 29, of Roanoke, Va., was charged with driving under the influence and driving without a valid license.
Police said the charges were filed following investigation into a truck that had struck a telephone pole and run over a parked car at about 3:51 p.m. May 11 at North Higgins Avenue and Tioga Street.
Several witnesses reported that Williams, who had been in the truck, ran to a nearby house, police said. According to police, Williams and Fessenden both smelled strongly of alcohol and exhibited signs of intoxication.
Witnesses told police that they had seen Fessenden driving, but Williams told police she was the driver, police said. One witness told police that Williams had been driving when the truck struck the car and pole, but Williams and Fessenden switched seats following the accident, according to police. The witness said Fessenden then tried to back the truck away from the pole, but backed over the front of the struck car, police said.
Fessenden's driver's license was suspended at the time of his arrest, police said.
Police transported Williams and Fessenden to Robert Packer Hospital to have blood drawn to determine their blood alcohol contents, police said. However, proper protocol was not followed with the specimens and they were no longer usable, police said.
Williams and Fessenden are both scheduled to face preliminary hearings July 16.
Man arrested for assault
A Stroudsburg, Pa. man was recently incarcerated by Athens Township police on a charge of aggravated assault.
According to papers filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Abraham Michael Nonnemaker, 35, was also charged with simple assault, reckless endangerment, terroristic threats and carrying a firearm without a license.
Police said Nonnemaker pointed a loaded .45 caliber handgun toward a male victim during a June 14 argument at a McCardle Road location. Nonnemaker told police he did not have a concealed carry permit, police said.
Nonnemaker was arraigned June 14 and remanded to the Bradford County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail. Nonnemaker's preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 25.
