Police Brief
Near accident causes DUI arrest
On Saturday, Sept. 20, officers with the Sayre Borough Police Department were conducting field sobriety tests on a different subject on North Thomas Avenue when another vehicle accelerated and pulled into the driveway, nearly hitting the first subject. The officer ran between the vehicle and subject to stop the vehicle and protect the subject from being struck from behind.
The vehicle stopped abruptly approximately two to four feet from striking the subject and the officer.
The officer approached the vehicle and identified Mark Joseph Roberts Sr., 58, of Sayre, as the driver. Roberts was instructed to turn off the vehicle and take the keys out of the ignition, to which he refused to comply. At this time Roberts Sr. yelled at the officer before turning the vehicle off and handing the keys to the officer.
Roberts Sr. was asked to leave the vehicle at which time he was observed unsteady on his feet and required assistance in exiting the vehicle. At this time officers asked Roberts Sr. to perform a series of field sobriety tests, which he failed to complete without losing his balance several times.
Roberts Sr. was placed under arrest and charged with DUI: highest rate of alcohol and careless driving. He will face Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw at 10 a.m. on Nov. 7 at a preliminary hearing to answer the charges.
