Road rage incident occurs
On Jan. 21, Sayre Police arrested 31-year-old Aaron D. Smith of Sayre for several charges related to driving under the influence of alcohol. Police were dispatched to an area on Stedman Street after they received a call from a driver who reported an incident of road rage.
The caller stated a driver nearly hit the vehicle they were operating head on while driving on Stevenson Street and they had followed the driver, thought to be under the influence, to a residence on Stedman Street. Smith then exited his vehicle, staggered toward the other vehicle, and attempted to initiate a fist fight with the driver, before entering the home.
Officers arrived on scene and asked Smith about the incident, which he denied to have any involvement in. Officers noted the presence of alcohol on Smith's breath, his general unsteadiness and glassy, bloodshot eyes - all indicators of inebriation. Officers also noted the vehicle described by the witness in Smith's driveway, with the engine still warm to the touch.
When asked to submit to a blood test for a sobriety check, Smith declined.
Based on the facts provided by witnesses as well as the investigation of the officers, Smith was charged with the following: DUI: highest rate of alcohol, careless driving, and driving on the right side of the roadway.
Smith will be asked to enter a plea to the charges at a preliminary hearing scheduled for March 27 with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw.
