Police Briefs

Theft reported

State police at Towanda said they responded to a complaint of a theft from a motor vehicle at Mobile Acres Trailer Park on the Berwick Turnpike.

Police said the incident took place sometime between 10 p.m. Aug. 2 and 7 a.m. Aug. 3.

According to police, Jay Merton Smith, 82, told police various items were stolen from his vehicle.

Police said they are investigating.

Sayre man charged with theft, receiving stolen property

Athens Township Police charged David Joseph Fassett with retail theft and receiving stolen property on July 29 after Fassett attempted to steal $246.92 worth of merchandise from the Elmira Street K-Mart in Athens Township, Athens police said.

K-Mart's Asset and Profit Protection Manager told police they saw a male, later identified as Fassett, removing tags from items in a hardware department and placing the items in a duffel bag, police said.

Fassett and a female with him paid for several items before attempting to leave with the unpaid merchandise, police said.

Items taken included a drill, rotary tool, sander, paint stripper, and other hardware items, police said.

Police said Fassett has a prior retail theft conviction.

Fassett has been issued a summons to appear before Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw on Sept. 8 for his preliminary hearing.

DUI charge

The following person was recently charged with driving while under the influence in Bradford County:

Matthew Wayne Gurnee, 28, of Warren Center, by Sayre Borough Police, on July 3, on South Lehigh Avenue in Sayre Borough. Gurnee has also been charged with careless driving. A preliminary breath test later revealed Gurnee's blood alcohol content to be .225 percent. Gurnee has been issued a summons to appear before Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw on Sept. 11 for his preliminary hearing.
