Car hits building

KULPMONT - A Hazleton man suffered a minor injury Tuesday after he slid on a snow-covered Chestnut Street (Route 61) and struck a residence.

Nick Nastasee, 21, was driving south in a 2006 Ford Fusion about 2:30 p.m. when the accident occurred. According to Police Chief Mike Pitcavage, Nastasee told police that he attempted to avoid a loader when he lost control of the vehicle, drove over the curb at Ninth Street and struck 861 Chestnut St. The vehicle continued on the sidewalk and reentered Chestnut Street, where it came to rest.

Nastasee was taken by AREA Services to Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital, Coal Township. Pitcavage said he complained of neck and back pain, and that he was wearing a seat belt.

Road conditions were a factor in the crash, Pitcavage said, and the accident remains under investigation.

The residence sustained damages near the front entrance. No tenants were injured.

Theft attempt

TREVORTON - Two men were arrested early Monday after allegedly attempting to steal tools and fuel, according to police and the victim.

Jordan Richard Diehl, of 2540 Tollgate Road, Quakertown, and Darren Scott Baker, of 1948 Shutt Mill Road, Skippack, will be charged with criminal mischief, criminal trespass and attempted theft, according to Cpl. Brent D. Zechman of state police at Stonington.

The two entered the property of Vince Guarna, of Mount Carmel, located off Route 2044 in Zerbe Township and broke a lock off a trailer. Security equipment alerted Guarna and his employees to the incident, and two employees confronted them on scene.

Guarna said one of the alleged perpetrators attempted to run over one of his employees and drove into the other's truck. The vehicle tire was shot out by Guarna's employee, he said, and a third suspect fled on foot. The other two were taken into custody by police.

The incident occurred about 12:30 a.m. Monday.

Slovinsky was arrested and arraigned via video conference by Magisterial District Judge John Gembic III on charges of aggravated and simple assault. Bail was set at $10,000 cash and she was jailed at Northumberland County Prison, Sunbury. A prison officer said she was released on bail later Saturday.

Police say the theft occurred at 9:45 p.m. Jan. 7.

Shamokin Police had previously said Seger admitted to rifling through 15 vehicles in both Shamokin and Coal Township between Jan. 3 and Jan. 9. He's been held in Northumberland County Prison, Sunbury, on a bail violation related to a 2012 theft case.
