Smith of Gillett, after a complaint from Walmart associates the three had stolen items from the store and fled in a silver Ford F-150.

Officers discovered the vehicle behind the Wendy's restaurant and approached the three individuals. As the officer was speaking with the three, he noticed several miscellaneous items scattered about the drivers compartment of the truck. The officers asked Douglas Smith, who was in the drivers seat, if he had any stolen items from Walmart, to which he stated, "no." At this time, Douglas Smith was asked to exit the vehicle and show a receipt for the items which he had purchased from Walmart. As he exited, the officers noted the presence of even more merchandise behind the seat and in a new garbage container in the rear bed of the truck. Mitchel Smith was subsequently found with various items of unpaid merchandise under his clothing and made a voluntary statement, "big deal you caught me with it," according to the report.

The three were taken to the Athens Township Police station and associates from Walmart arrived to identify that both Mitchel and Douglas Smith had been observed taking items from the store without payment, the report continued. Further, the employees stated that Trindle was behind the wheel of the truck and drove the two men away from the store with the unpaid merchandise.
