New Albany man charged with possession of heroin

Dustin Michael Chilson, 23, of New Albany has been charged with possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a small amount of marijuana for personal use, Towanda police said.

The charges stemmed from a May 29 traffic stop that occurred because police could see that half of his 2013 Pennsylvania inspection sticker had been removed, police said.

Towanda police Officer Josh Lake said he initially tried to pull Chilson over on the Merrill Parkway in Towanda, but it wasn't until Chilson reached Wickwire Way in Wysox Township that he finally stopped his vehicle.

During the traffic stop, police determined that Chilson was wanted out of Luzerne County, Pa., and placed him under arrest, police said.

Towanda police said they then searched Chilson and found a black case in one of his pockets which contained a full pack of heroin, a plastic baggie containing a small amount of marijuana, and a glass pipe with a burnt residue, which is commonly used to smoke bath salts.

Chilson gave Towanda police permission to search the vehicle, and, during the search, police found seven unused hypodermic needles between the driver seat and the front console, police said.

Also found during the search of the vehicle was a silver container with a white powdery residue, which Chilson said was bath salts, police said.

There were two other individuals in the vehicle, too, police said.

Chilson was also charged with driving with a suspended or revoked license, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving without insurance, and driving a vehicle that did not display a valid inspection sticker, police said.

Chilson waived his preliminary hearing, which had been scheduled for June 4 in Towanda District Court.

Chilson's case has therefore been transferred to the Bradford County Court of Common Pleas, where he is scheduled to be arraigned on June 26.
